The Best Souvenirs to Buy While Traveling: Practical, Affordable & Truly One-of-a-Kind

One of the most memorable parts of any trip is bringing home a little piece of it with you. But not all souvenirs are created equal. Forget the overpriced trinkets and mass-produced keychains—some of the best travel keepsakes are practical, affordable, and completely unique to the places you visit. Whether you’re shopping for yourself or a loved one, the most meaningful souvenirs are the ones that tell a story, serve a purpose, or spark a memory every time you see or use them.

Here are five of the best souvenirs to pick up on your next adventure:

1. Local Spices or Cooking Ingredients

Food is one of the most immersive parts of travel, and bringing home local spices or regional ingredients lets you recreate the flavors of your trip long after you’ve returned. Think saffron from Morocco, herbes de Provence from France, or dried chiles from New Mexico. These are usually inexpensive, lightweight, and easy to pack, making them perfect for carry-on travelers.

Wonderland Tea from Disney

Our personal favorites include hot sauce from Belize and pure vanilla from Mexico.  Swiss chocolate is pretty good too.  Be careful about the sizing of any liquids that you may try to bring back via plane. If you plan to carry it on the liquid must meet TSA guidelines.

2. Handmade or Locally Crafted Items

Supporting local artisans is a great way to get something truly special. Look for handmade jewelry, woven baskets, wood carvings, pottery, or textiles that reflect the region’s cultural identity. Not only do you get a one-of-a-kind souvenir, but your purchase directly supports local craftsmanship rather than mass production.

Cruise ship Christmas ornament

Christmas ornaments are often great ways to remember trips once you’re back home. We have a travel-themed tree for Christmas.

Christmas ornaments are small and can fit nicely in luggage.  Look for handcrafted items versus mass-produced ones.

3. Stationery or Postcards From Small Shops

Stationery, postcards, or even small notebooks from local bookstores or gift shops often feature regional artwork or landmarks. These are lightweight, affordable, and perfect for scrapbooking or journaling your adventures. Bonus: buy a few extras to write a note and mail them to yourself or friends from your travel destination!

Owl post at Universal Orlando

When traveling to Universal Orlando, you can even send a postcard via Owl Post that will come stamped from Hogsmeade.

4. Pressed Pennies or Small Coins

If you’re looking for something nostalgic and budget-friendly, pressed pennies (or local coins) are perfect. Many attractions around the world offer machines that press a design into a penny for a small fee. Coins, too, are tiny tokens of where you’ve been—and a fun way to start a collection with a story behind every piece.

Pressed penny machine at Disney

Disney has several pressed penny machines.  Check out some of their locations here.

We like to keep our pressed pennies in this fun Penny Passport. Its lightweight and compact design is great for travel.

5. Practical Items With Local Flair

Think tote bags from local markets, mugs from a regional café, or reusable water bottles with location-specific branding. These are items you’ll actually use at home but that still remind you of your travels. Functional souvenirs that double as conversation starters are always a win!

In our home, I use a spoon rest made in Bermuda daily.  We also have a framed piece of art that we picked up in Rome, above our entertainment center.

Final Thoughts

Souvenirs don’t have to be expensive or flashy to be meaningful. The best ones are thoughtful, useful, and rooted in the local culture. They capture the spirit of a destination while fitting easily into your daily life. Next time you travel, skip the tourist traps and seek out something that truly reflects your journey.
