The Hopwood Trip Fund Formula: How We Use Everyday Spending and Rewards Programs to Save Money for Travel
What if your everyday purchases could help pay for your next vacation? Do you have a rewards program to save money for travel?
Many families tell me they would love to travel more, but the cost of flights, hotels, cruises, and theme parks keeps getting higher. While there is no magic trick to make travel free, there are smart ways to make your money work harder.
Over the years, I have learned that the secret is not just finding cheap vacations—it is creating a system.

I call it the Hopwood Trip Fund Formula.
This is the strategy I use to decide:
- Which credit card earns the most rewards (check bonuses and compare cards)
- Which apps help me earn gift cards
- Where to stack savings
- How to turn everyday spending into future adventures
(Always remember: credit cards should be paid off monthly. Rewards are only valuable if you are not paying interest.)
Step 1: Pick Your Travel Goal
Before collecting points, decide what you are saving for.
Are you dreaming of:
✈️ A family Disney vacation?
🚢 A cruise?
🏝️ A beach getaway?
🏨 A hotel stay?
🌎 A bucket-list adventure?

Different rewards work better for different types of travel.
For example:
- Airline miles can be great for flights.
- Hotel points can reduce lodging costs.
- Flexible travel points can give you more options.
- Cash-back rewards can help pay for anything.
Step 2: Match Your Spending to the Right Reward
Here is the basic Hopwood Trip Fund Formula:
🛒 Groceries
Best strategy: Use a card that earns bonus rewards on grocery spending.
Groceries are one of the easiest ways to earn rewards because every family spends money there.
Extra savings ideas:
✅ Use grocery store apps
✅ Clip digital coupons
✅ Stack manufacturer coupons
✅ Use receipt apps like Ibotta
Apps like Ibotta allow you to earn cash back on items you are already buying.
Small savings add up:
$5 per week = $260 per year
$10 per week = $520 per year
That could become your vacation spending money!
Credit cards often have opt-in options for different categories each month that allow you do maximize your points. Be sure to stay mindful of which categories earn bonus points each month.
⛽ Gas
Fuel purchases are another easy category to maximize.
Look for:
✅ Gas station rewards programs
✅ Credit cards offering gas bonuses
✅ Apps offering fuel discounts
Even saving a few cents per gallon adds up for families who drive frequently.
🏰 Disney Spending
Disney vacations can get expensive quickly, so having a strategy helps.

Ways to save:
A Disney Visa card can be useful for Disney fans because it may offer:
- Disney discounts
- Disney reward dollars
- Special financing promotions (when available)
- I’m inviting you to get any Disney® Visa® Card. You can earn a new Card member bonus after qualifying purchases, and I can get a bonus if you apply here and are approved for the card. Terms apply. Learn more.
However, Disney is not the only way to save.
Other strategies:
✅ Buy discounted gift cards when available (Sam’s Club is an excellent source for this)
✅ Use rewards earned from everyday spending
✅ Watch for promotions
✅ Plan dining carefully
A $25 gift card saved here and a $50 reward there can make a big difference.
*Pro Tip: Multiple Disney gift cards can be combined into one using the Official Disney Gift Card website.
🚢 Cruise Savings Strategy
Cruises are one of my favorite ways to travel because they offer so much value:
✔️ Food included
✔️ Entertainment included
✔️ Multiple destinations
✔️ Family-friendly options

For cruises, I focus on:
Flexible points
These can sometimes help offset:
- Cruise airfare
- Hotels before sailing
- Transportation
Cruise line rewards
Some cruise cards offer:
- Onboard credits
- Points toward future cruises
- Special offers
Remember: the best cruise deal is not always the lowest price. Sometimes the best value comes from:
- Better cabin location
- Added perks
- Onboard credits
- Flexible cancellation options
Choosing the right ship can save you just as much money as finding the right deal. Read my comparison of Carnival Jubilee vs. MSC Seascape before booking.
🎰 Casino Loyalty Programs: A Hidden Way to Save on Travel
Many travelers think of cruise rewards as the only casino-related travel benefit, but there is another opportunity that many people overlook: local casino loyalty programs.
If you enjoy visiting casinos close to home, your casino play may earn you rewards that can sometimes include:
- Free or discounted hotel stays
- Dining credits
- Entertainment offers
- Resort promotions
- Special event invitations
- Travel-related offers
- Cruise offers through casino partnerships

Many regional casinos have loyalty programs that track your play and reward your visits. Even occasional players may receive promotional offers depending on the casino, your activity, and their marketing programs.
Examples of places where travelers may already have loyalty accounts include:
🎰 Local casinos
🎰 Regional casino resorts
🎰 Tribal casinos
🎰 Destination casino resorts
🎰 Cruise ship casinos
How Casino Loyalty Can Connect to Cruises
Many casino groups and cruise lines work together to offer cruise promotions to qualified players.
A traveler might receive:
🚢 Discounted cruise fares
🚢 Reduced deposits
🚢 Casino rate offers
🚢 Complimentary cruise opportunities
🚢 Onboard casino incentives
These offers are typically based on factors such as:
- Your casino loyalty level
- Your gaming activity
- How often you visit
- The specific promotion being offered
Before Booking a Casino Cruise Offer, Compare Your Options
A “free” or discounted cruise offer does not always mean it is automatically the best deal.
Before accepting an offer, consider:
✔️ Port fees and taxes
✔️ Airfare costs
✔️ Cabin location
✔️ Travel dates
✔️ What is included
✔️ Whether another cruise promotion offers better value
This is where having a travel advisor can make a big difference.
I can help you:
✅ Review casino cruise offers
✅ Compare them with regular cruise pricing
✅ Find the best ship and itinerary
✅ Help with flights, hotels, transfers, and pre-cruise planning
✅ Make sure the offer actually fits your vacation goals
✈️ Airfare
Flights are often the biggest travel expense, especially for families.

Strategies:
Airline miles
Great for travelers who:
- Fly the same airline often
- Have convenient airports nearby
- Can plan ahead
Flexible travel points
These can be valuable because they allow you to choose:
- Different airlines
- Different dates
- Different destinations
Tips:
✅ Compare cash prices and points prices
✅ Avoid using points when the value is poor
✅ Watch for airline sales
The Disney Visa Card can also be used for an airline statement credit. What that means is after purchasing your airline tickets using your Disney Visa Card, you then can redeem your points for a statement credit to come off the price of the tickets. It is an easy way to earn free or discounted flights.
After saving on your flights, don’t lose those savings with baggage fees. Here’s my guide to Carry-On vs. Checked Luggage.
🏨 Hotels
Hotel rewards can save hundreds of dollars.
Consider:
- Hotel loyalty programs
- Flexible travel points
- Booking direct when it makes sense
A free hotel night before a cruise can save money and reduce stress.
One of the easiest ways to save money is avoiding expensive booking mistakes. Read What They Don’t Tell You About Booking During Peak Season.
📦 Amazon Purchases
Amazon is where many families accidentally miss rewards.
My strategy:
Before buying:
- Check if I need it now
- Compare prices
- Look for cash-back opportunities
Ways to save:
✅ Amazon rewards card (if it fits your spending habits)
✅ Amazon promotions
✅ Gift card discounts
✅ Cash-back apps
Small purchases add up quickly!
Check out our Amazon Storefront for our personal travel gear recommendations.
💰 Everyday Purchases
This is where the system really works.
Think about everything you already buy:
Instead of thinking:
“I spent $100.”
Think:
“I spent $100 and earned something back.”
My Favorite Travel Money Tools
Here are some tools I personally use or recommend families explore:
Receipt Apps
📱 Ibotta
Earn cash back on everyday purchases.
*I love using this and linking my Dollar General app and my Wal-Mart app for grocery pick-ups. Be sure to order through the Ibotta app when submitting your grocery order.
Survey and Reward Apps
📱 Swagbucks
Earn points toward gift cards.
*Pro-Tip: Use my referral links above to earn start-up money on your accounts.

Some of my favorite ways to redeem gift cards are PayPal, Starbucks (can be used on cruises, Disney, or Universal Orlando Resorts for breakfast and/or snacks), and Disney Gift Cards.
Travel Rewards Credit Cards
Choose based on:
✔️ Your travel style
✔️ Your spending habits
✔️ Your preferred airlines/hotels
✔️ Whether you pay your balance monthly
The Biggest Mistake People Make With Rewards
The biggest mistake?
Collecting rewards without a plan.
A wallet full of cards does not automatically create free travel. Finding the best start up bonus is the best way to maximize your credit cards. Once you redeem these points and the card is no longer working for your current needs, simply close out that account and open a new account with a new bonus start up. Remember don’t overdo it on opening up credit cards. This can actually harm your credit score.
Another way to maximize your points is to open up a credit card account in either your or your spouse’s name, then get a secondary card for the other person. This way you can both earn points on one account instead of two. Just always remember to pay off your balance at the end of each month.
The goal is simple:
Spend intentionally. Earn rewards. Redeem strategically. Travel more.
Final Thoughts
Travel does not have to be reserved for people with unlimited budgets.
With planning, patience, and a good system, your everyday spending can help create unforgettable memories.
