Start With the Big Picture (And Key Deadlines You Can’t Miss)
Planning a Disney trip isn’t just about picking your dates—it’s about knowing when to act. Here are the most important dates to mark on your calendar:

- Pick your dates based on crowds, weather, and special events.
- Decide on the length of your trip and how many park days you want.
- 60 Days Before Check-In:
You can begin booking dining reservations for your entire stay (up to 10 days) starting at 5:45 AM EST—yes, it’s early, but it’s worth it for popular spots like Cinderella’s Royal Table or Space 220. - PRO TIP: If you can’t get the dining you want immediately, keep trying. Sometimes, reservations open up closer to your dates when people start canceling. Start with the end of your trip first and work backward to secure the best restaurants first.
- 7 Days Before Check-In (Onsite Guests):
Staying at a Disney Resort hotel? You can make Lightning Lane (Genie+) ride reservations 7 days in advance for paid Individual Lightning Lane rides like Tron or Flight of Passage. - 3 Days Before Park Day (Offsite Guests):
If you’re staying offsite, you can begin booking Individual Lightning Lanes starting 3 days before each park day. - Bonus Planning Tip:
Set reminders on your phone and have your My Disney Experience account set up with payment info pre-loaded. Things go quickly! - Pro tip: You don’t need a park every day—rest or pool days can make the trip better!
Park Strategy That Actually Works
- Which parks on which days? Use crowd calendars and early entry info.
- Park hopping: worth it or not? I always advise first-time park goers to purchase base tickets with one park per day. Especially when traveling with little ones. Trying to hop all around can be exhausting.
To really see the most for your money take your time in each park to enjoy it. Once you have seen most of the parks then start hopping. Don’t try to push yourself too much on your first trip. When staying on property its easy to take an afternoon rest break and come back to the same park in the evening.
- Which park pairs well for a hop (e.g., Epcot & Hollywood Studios via Skyliner)?
Dining and Genie+—Simplified

- Prioritize 1–2 must-do dining reservations per day, then leave room for flexibility. Don’t try to do too many character meals. 1-2 per trip work just fine for us.
Seeing characters during breakfast and lunch can help save money, but keep in mind that some characters only come out during dinner like the Beast at Be Our Guest.
- Use Genie+ where it counts (Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios especially).
- Stack Genie+ return times for afternoons if starting with rope drop.
Insider Hacks You Won’t Hear in a Brochure

- Plan around transportation time—Disney buses, boats, monorail, and Skyliner all have pros/cons.
- Use mobile order in the app to save time.
- Hidden gems: free things to do on non-park days (resort hopping, Disney Springs, scavenger hunts).
